Canada Tourist Visa (TRV) Approved

Pawan Bahuguna

I want to share one good news with you all. Finally, my tourist visa for Canada got approved and I am back from Vacations. And in this article, I want to share my experience with you about how I got my Canadian Temporary Resident Visa (TRV). I will be sharing the complete process and what documents I submitted with the application. I submitted my application for the Canada tourist visa at the VFS New Delhi office and the experience was good.

Canada visitor visa approved trv

If you are a first time visitor to Canada as a tourist, student, or for business, you may have a problem in filling your application form, collecting all the documents, and many other things. I too had many questions in my mind before filling the application for a Canadian tourist visa and do not want to hire any tourist or visa consultant but the internet helped me a lot in clearing my doubts. There are many good forums and websites which have valuable information for free.

Medical Insurance for Parents Visiting Canada

I applied under “Visiting family or friends” category as I have to visit my brother who has a PR status in Canada and he gave me the invitation letter. An invitation letter is very important if someone is calling you to Canada.

So, if you have made your mind to visit Canada as a tourist then, first of all, determine your eligibility to visit Canada. You can visit CIC website for it.

If you found eligible to visit Canada as per the above eligibility test, you can apply for the visa.

You can apply for a Canadian tourist visa in 2 ways. First via online application and the second through an offline form by visiting embassy or VFS office in your area. VFS is the best option if you are applying offline and I haven’t found anyone going to the Canadian embassy themselves for a visa.

I applied for visitor visa through offline method via VFS Global as I don’t have enough time and online process generally takes a long time [that is what I have heard]. An offline process takes around 10 business days or 2 weeks. You can get full information about Visitor Visa (Temporary Resident Visa – TRV) for Canada at CIC website.

Note: Current processing time from India is 44 days.

Don’t forget to include Niagara Falls in your day to day plan, as it is one of the most famous tourist places in Canada, and without seeing it your trip is incomplete. Check the below video and you would know yourself.

My Documents List for Canadian Tourist Visa

I included many documents along with the application form to make sure I am in a good position to get Canada visitor visa. Below are the documents which I included for your reference. You can include other documents too which are suitable and can make your application stronger.

1. Document Checklist [IMM 5558]

2. Application for Temporary Resident Visa [IMM 5257]

3. Family Information [IMM 5645]

4. A Bonafide letter from my company stating that they don’t have any problem and my leaves are approved. The letter should be on official letterhead and signed by your HR. Include an original letter not duplicate.

5. Income tax returns for the past 3 years, though 2 years ITR are sufficient as per the CIC website.

6. Bank statements for the past 6 months showing I have enough money for my stay in Canada and I have money to return back.

7. Letter of invitation from the person inviting you (from my brother) indicating the purpose and duration of the visit.

8. Family details of the person inviting you. Also include their passport number and citizenship.

9. My brother and his family PR card photocopy.

10. My brother’s job offer letter, Notice of Assessments (NOA) and pay slips.

11. I also included my marriage and my child’s birth certificate. This is for showing my strong relationship with my home country.

12. Detailed itinerary and purpose of visit.

13. Round trip air tickets.

14. Proof of previous travel. I included the photostat of my Japan visa and landing stamp.

15. My stocks (shares) statement.

16. Medical insurance for the period of my stay with $100,000 coverage. This I booked with an Indian insurance company as it is cheaper depending upon the number of days you stay in Canada.

17. Last but not the least, do write a cover letter supporting your application and submit it.

Check Different Letter Formats for Canada Tourist Visa (TRV)

I applied in June 2015 and since then, I can see there is a new form or instruction booklet added in the document list for Canadian tourist visa called Visa office instructions – Visit [IMM 5881], which has mainly documented checklist for Temporary Resident Visa (TRV). I am very glad to see that CIC has made a very good list of documents and removed all the confusion which the applicant can have. Do download it.

Note: I would like to thank my brother for helping me collecting the required documents and clearing my doubts wherever needed.

Tips for Canada Temporary Resident Visa – TRV

Below are few tips which I would like to share with you if you are thinking to apply for Canadian tourist visa.

1. Make a list of documents that you need for applying.

2. Collect all the information needed to fill in your application.

3. Fill out the required application forms as applicable to you.

4. Always give correct information on your application forms.

5. If possible, book your flight tickets in advance and include them with the application. It really makes a very big difference and make your application stronger.

6. Medical insurance is also good if you are going to Canada.

7. Do get your application checked by someone else [Very important]. I made one mistake in my main application and will share what I did to correct it in the next post.

8. Make visa officer believe that you are going to return back and have sufficient funds for stay by giving correct information. Don’t FAKE anything else you may be banned for a visa.

9. Do include your cover letter with the application stating why you want to go to Canada and in that letter show your strong relationship with the home country.

After submitting all the documents I got multiple entry Canada visitor visas till the validity of my passport which is 5 years.

Fees of Canada Temporary Resident Visa or Tourist visa

Current fees of Canadian temporary resident visa (TRV) is $100 (CAD). This fee is same for single entry and multiple entry visa. By default you will get multiple-entry Canadian visitor visa.

There is no option to select whether you are applying for a single entry or multiple entry visa now. Earlier the fees of a single entry and multiple entries were different and you also get the option to choose for what type of visa you are applying.

    Hello,
Thank you for your reply. The visa was denied twice in the same month and tear that in is aug 2016. I don’t know what are my chances now to get a study visa.
However, I wish to apply for a tourist visa for around December. Not sure if my study visa refusal effects my chances of getting a tourist visa.

    • Pawan Bahuguna

Hmm, Study visa refusal has nothing to do with tourist visa, but they might think you are desperate to go to Canada as your study visa is rejected thrice.

Did they gave same reason every time? And for what course you were applying.

      September 19, 2016
  2. Surbhi Verma

I applied for study visa for Canada but it was refused and the reason was that my studies were not relevant. Now I want to apply for a tourist visa. I have two invitation letters from Canadian citizens, all the required documents and finances. O have travelled to Switzerland, France, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand in the past.
Will my study permit refusal effect my visitor visa?
    Thanks in advance.

    September 19, 2016
    • Pawan Bahuguna

      Hi Surbhi,

Which course you opted in Canada and in India what were your qualifications?

I don’t think study permit refusal should effect your visitor visa. Even you can apply for study visa on some other relevant courses.

  3. rhina

    hello sir,

can you pls enlighten me on how to get a higher chance of trv approval if i am applying without an invitation letter. what supporting documents should i have? pls let me know. thank you!

    September 12, 2016
    • Pawan Bahuguna

      Hi Rhina,

If you are going without invitation letter, you should have strong reason for visiting Canada. Suppose you are going for tourism, you should have hotel booking, round trip tickets, itinerary, medical and enough money to sustain in Canada.

      Hope that helps.

    Hi Pawan,

    How are you doing today?
Your forum is helping lot of people like me i appreciate your good work.
I am really confused need your advice recently i came to know. student spouse can apply for open work permit visa since my wife is a student in Canada.

Do you suggest to apply from India or in Canada after visiting as a visitor for open work permit,
    which one is fast.
    Thanks again

    September 2, 2016
    • Pawan Bahuguna

      Hi Hassan,

      Thanks for appreciating.

Yes, you are right spouse of student in Canada can apply for “Open Work Visa”, but I don’t have any experience in that. If I was in your situation I would go for Open work visa from India itself.

  6. Raji

    Hi

I am applying for canada visitor visa online. My question is where can i include or upload the cover letter? My cousin is inviting me and there is no proof of relation with her. Is this a mandatory and if so, what can i do. Please help me. Thanks in advance.

    August 28, 2016
    • Pawan Bahuguna

      Hi Raji,

Proof of relation can only be proved in blood relation. If you can write how you are associated with your cousin it will be enough. I don’t have much Idea about online filling, but there should be option for uploading cover letter.

      I prefer going offline.

      August 28, 2016

Hi, thanks for ur reply ..

        August 28, 2016
        • Pawan Bahuguna

Give them strong reason why you want to visit to Canada like tourism, or haven’t met you cousin from long time, etc. Reason should be strong enough.

Do you work or study? Also, you should be having enough funds in your account to prove you can stay on your own.

          August 28, 2016
          • Jesmin ali

Thank u … M not thinking about study or work at this moment .. When I can apply again for TRV and do I need to arrange all the papers again lik invitation letter n PR card copy ,tax return papers ?? Ma documents I hv given bank statement , employment letter, cover letter, advance flight booking, travel insurance . wht else needed ? Soon cousin getting mrrd there can I give ny of his documents although he is also multiple visitor visa holder thre not PR or work permit …

            August 28, 2016
          • Pawan Bahuguna

If you are applying in few days, no need of arranging documents again. Old one will work.

Just one question. How your cousin on visitor visa can invite you? For invitation you should have someone who has valid PR or citizenship.

            August 28, 2016
          • Jesmin ali

No I meant if I cn give reason tht ma uncle inviting me for his son’s wedding .. Do I need any additional documents for tht ?? And I have all the documents copy shall I submit copy which I already submitted? Last 6months statements Or recent?

            August 28, 2016
          • Pawan Bahuguna

Yes, you will need invitation letter, or you can write same in invitation letter. Though I am not expert in this matter, it should work.

As I said earlier, if the documents are old enough then use new one.

            August 31, 2016

    Hi Pawan

Hope you are good. Pawan I applied for Canadian visit visa through agent and it got refused on 19th august 2016. I applied online. It took 70 days to get refusal.i was refused for travel history, family ties and insufficient funds. though i had uk visa and recently got USA visa and visited Kuwait and UAE two times. anyway the problem was he did not include our job certificate property documents. May be that online system is little complicated. you have to create one PDF for all documents. anyways now i want to reapply with proper documents.

I think i can do my own with all documents. I just need your help Pawan if you can email me sample of travel history, purpose of visit (daily itinerary ), cover letter formats. i just need format so that i can change it to my requirement. I shall be very thankful to you. my email id is [email protected]

My sister lives in Alberta and she is married to Canadian national and she has PR status.but in first application we did not mention that we are going to meet her. we selected niagara falls for our destination both in USA and Canada. this time we are going for invitation letter with same tourism purpose as we will meet her. What type of documents do we need her. this time we are showing that we are coming to visit Alberta, jasper and other places with niagara falls and we will then leave for USA Niagara falls. our visit plan for Canada is 10 days and 10 days for USA.

And i am going for online. Is it ok to do online because i am planning to visit USA for two weeks. By applying this i can visit USA. Passport will not be bound.

Please advise me what you reckon, paper or online and what other thing i should focus to file a solid application.

    August 25, 2016
    • Pawan Bahuguna

All the formats are available online, just make Google search and you will find many formats. Choose and modify any one.

I won’t go for online because we cannot show enough documents. While in Offline, you can give many relevant documents and there is no boundation.

  9. Gurjinder singh

    Hello Pawan

I am Gurjinder singh from Punjab. I have been travel in singapore, Indonesia and also studied in UK, so I want to know is there any positive hope to get Canada tourist visa, even I don’t have invitation letter from Canada ,but I have all other documents like ITR, business proofs and etc. please reply to me.

    August 21, 2016
    • Pawan Bahuguna

      Hi Gurjinder,

It depends upon why you want to visit Canada. If you are able to prove your genuine reason to go Canada with enough funds and also assure you will return back, then getting Visitor visa is easy.

  10. Sam Paul

    Hello,

I had recieved admission at the University of Waterloo and had hence applied online for a study permit on May 19, 2016. Yesterday, I received a message in my CIC account asking to submit my passport but with no indication of whether it was approved.

Does the request to send the passport imply that the study permit is approved?

    Thanking you,

    Yours truly
    Sam Paul

    Hi dear,
I would like to know the difference between letter of explanation and support letter including purpose of travel- other (required)
    Hope to hear from you.

    August 16, 2016
    • Pawan Bahuguna

      Hi Larry,

Letter of Explanation and purpose of travel are same, where you need to tell why you are visiting Canada.

What you mean by support letter? Is this summary doc.?

  13. Irfan

    Hello Pawan,

Hope you are doing grate. I dont have any travel history except 2 UK study visa rejections in past. Should I apply for Canadian Visit Visa? Also can you email me your proposed travel itinerary??

Plz guide me according to my profile. Thanks in advance.

    Regards;
    Irfan

    August 14, 2016
    • Pawan Bahuguna

      Hi Irfan,

Visitor visa to Canada depends upon why you want to visit and if you have sufficient money for your expenses. In my itinerary, I included day to day plan and similarly you can make yours as per your visit.

  14. Jyothi R

Hi, Thank you very much for the information.

I am from India, In Apr 2016 I have applied for the TRV. But it was rejected giving reason insufficient funds and family ties in India. I have shown $2000 and also my employment details.

And my husband invited me, he has working visa and not holding PR. Again i am planning to apply TRV.

Is job matters means i have a small income job? Do i need to show tax statements?

Could you please suggest me how to apply and can i apply open work permit?

    August 13, 2016
    • Pawan Bahuguna

      Hi Jyothi,

Yes, they do ask for ITR and you have to show enough amount for your stay and also letter from your husband that he is going to take care of your living expenses. For how many days you applied for TRV?

$2000 seems small amount if you have not booked round trip ticket. Also on your cover letter give details about your relatives and convince you are going to return.

I don’t think you can apply for open work permit as your husband is on working visa, but do confirm from Canada immigration website.

  15. Sunny

    Pawan Hi.

I applied for 15 days tourist visa to Canada . I got 10 year multiple visa. My travel schedule has got postponed by 7 days. I have changed my hotel booking dates with the hotel I had done hotel booking earlier. Will I be questioned at airport by Visa officials reason of not travelling on applied dates.. Also if I get a 6 months entry can I stay for 5 months in Canada. Is it necessary to inform anything to the visa staff or I have the privilege of staying in Canada for 6 months and return before expiry of visa. Kindly suggest.

    August 9, 2016
    • Pawan Bahuguna

      Hi Sunny,

Good to hear that you have got TRV. There is no issue in postponing your visit. Immigration office ask why you are visiting Canada and when you are going to leave. Tell them the truth and tell you have returning ticket also and you are good. You can stay for 5 months nothing wrong as per my understanding, though you will have to reschedule your tickets and that cost good amount of money.

  16. Komal

Hi I applied offline on 21 of July to Canada to attend marriage now marriage date is 27 of August but we did not get any response from them
How much time they will take to process the file??

    August 4, 2016
    • Pawan Bahuguna

      Hi Komal,

Now processing time is 33 days as per CIC website. Also processing times will vary based on (Below is from CIC website):

      Type of application submitted;
      Volume of applications received;
      How easily we can verify information;
      How well and how quickly you respond to any requests or concerns;
      Whether the application is complete.
Many more people want to immigrate to Canada than the Government of Canada can bring in each year under our annual immigration plan. Applications received after the maximum has been met may have to wait longer to be processed.

  17. Hassan

    Hi Pawan,

Thanks so much for your response, this forum helps lot of us. Just have one more question, if reduce my trip from 15 days to 7 days will there be any issue getting a visa ?
If I later wants to change or extend my visa after entering Canada what are my options?
I want to thank you for your efforts god bless you.

    Hassan

    July 30, 2016
    • Pawan Bahuguna

There is no issue, that’s upto you. Tourist Visa is for 6 months in one trip, so if you want to stay longer you can.

      August 3, 2016
      • Hassan

Thanks for your kind reply, i really appreciate it i’ll follow your guidance.

  18. Hassan

    Hi Pawan,

I am Hassan from Hyderabad, thanks for your support in this forum.

I need your guidance in applying for visitor visa. My wife invited me, she’s a student in Canadian college the problem i have my employer not granting me leave. Maximum I can get like 1 week leave i don’t know whether its sufficient to get visa approval.

My second question is i can get generic letter of proof of employment from my employer which have my name, designation, annual salary, date of joining, but it won’t mention granting of leave.

Lastly, I have about 3 lacks in my a/c for funds will that be fine enough if i plan for 15 days visit.

    Thanks for your efforts

    July 29, 2016
    • Pawan Bahuguna

      Hi Hassan,

You are visiting for 15 days and your employer giving leave for only 1 week? That can be problem, try to get “No objection certificate (NOC)”, that they don’t have any objection on your visa for that period.

You can show your offer letter, pay stubs, bank statements for that. NOC is should work in this case.

It depends upon your expanses, but as per living standard of Canada and travel expenses you amount looks adequate.

      July 30, 2016
  19. Poornima

Sorry one more question. How did you create your travel itinerary? Is there any form for it? Did you take the help of any travel agency for it? I don’t know what all information I should put it in, is it sufficient if I just put a tentative list of places I plan to visit? Sorry for bothering you again and thanks again 🙂

    July 29, 2016
    • Pawan Bahuguna

There is no specific form, I just wrote on the Microsoft word and took printout in A4 sheet. The main important thing is to show that how you are going to spend all those days in Canada. I listed all the things I want to do date wise including family time, visit to Niagara Falls, rest, etc.

Yes, its tentative as you have not visited Canada.

      Hope it helps.

  20. Poornima

Dear Pawan, thank you so much for this valuable info. I am applying for a tourist visa right now and my friend will be inviting me. I would be very grateful if you can provide the following info:

    1) Did your brother notarise his invite letter? I have seen very confusing instructions about this. Also did he send you the original copy of his invite letter or just a scanned copy?
    2) For how long did you state your visit was for? I want to stay there for 3 months but I feel it would be too much for “visiting and tourism”
    3) What did you mention in your cover letter? I am breaking my head trying to write a convincing letter but I cannot think of what to mention as purpose of visit other than “visiting my friend”. I feel it is not strong.

I am not married so I do not know what I can show as strong ties to my home country so I am trying to do the best I can with my cover letter

    Once again thanks in advance

    July 29, 2016
    • Pawan Bahuguna

      Hi Poornima,

Below are the answer to your questions.

      1. No, he didn’t notarized the invite letter and sent me scan copy with his signature and to verify signature he used his Canadian driving letter. Also if the person inviting you giving photocopies his documents like PR card, Passport and his family details, there documents, etc. then it’s good.

      2. I only visited for 20 days. For 3 months you will have to show enough funds and full plan for 3 months, how you are going to spend your days and all.

      3. In my cover letter, I wrote about why I want to visit and also told that I have booked round trip ticket with medical and has full intention to return back. Also gave my employment details and information about my family members present in India.

As you are not married, you will have to show strong tie to India. Also, do you work or study?

      July 30, 2016
      • Poornima

Thank you very much Pawan, this is all very helpful. Showing amount is not a problem for me but I am not sure how I will justify tourism for 3 months, so I am thinking of reducing it to 1 month 🙁
I am part of a small startup based in India and I am one of the founder members so I am not “employed” in the traditional sense but yeah I am working. But I cannot show employer letter etc unless I issue it to myself, lol.

        July 30, 2016
        • Pawan Bahuguna

If you are not sure to justify 3 months, than reduce it to 1 month. As you are founder member of startup, you can show the corresponding documents to them.

          July 30, 2016
          • Poornima

Thank you for all your help Pawan, that is what I will do.

    Hi,
I applied for a visa offline through VFS on the 23rd of June. I’m yet to hear anything about it. I’ve tried checking the status on the VFS website but it only comes up as processing. My office NOC was issued from 29th June through 29th July. Would it be okay for me to tell them that i’ve resumed work since the processing was taking too long and if issued a visa i can always travel at a later date? Please advise. When i first applied, the processing time was 24 days but it shows 32 now. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

      Hi Aayush,

No, just wait for your passport to arrive at visa office and hope for best.

what is the minimum fund requirement to show for six month trv visa for canada

      Hi Vipin,

More the funds, good are you chances to get visa. I have read on forum’s that you require around $1000/week, though this figure is not mandatory and written any where.

I have made the mistake of directly filing application to the embassy.
My application is received online and has not moved for last 4 weeks. average processing time shown on website is 30 days..I will try to call them and see if they can give any update.

online they dont ask for any cover letter and just submission of basic PDFs and passport scan.

This is not eVISA and I may have to appear for interview…looks like i am not going to make it to canada on my proposed travel date (another 3 weeks from now on)

do you know how long they will sit on my passport? currently it is with me but i may have to surrender it after approval. I do not want to be in a situation where passport is in embassy and travel date is tomorrow!

I don’t have much experience with online filling but I have heard that they took quite a long time to process it. This may be due to additional requesting you to submit passport and then you will send them.

      Hi Deepak,

If you have all the documents then you are good to file TRV. Make sure you have a good reason to visit Canada as a tourist.

      Hi Rajesh,

Looks like you applied online. Do check their processing time for TRV. If it’s passed you can send email to them. Due to summer season, they may be busy.

      Hi Moiz,

Why are you not applying from Dubai if you are currently there? Moreover documents and procedure remains same. Do check CIC website once for new forms and required documents as they time to time update them.

    Dear Pawan,
    Thanks for your reply!
    I would like to ask you one more question;

when I write a cover letter, where should I put it during submitting my application offline? should be in the first page? or bar-code should be the first page?.
Also, would you please send me a sample of Cover Letter? my trip purpose is “Conference ”

    Thank you!

    June 24, 2016
    • Pawan Bahuguna

Sorry, but I don’t have any samples. If you are submitting it offline, they will automatically arrange your documents. Try to arrange documents in same order given in checklist.

Hi! I have applied for TRV online and now worried that I may not get approval as my flight date is drawing near.

What can I do to hasten the process? I am travelling 4/7/2016 with my family members who do not need visa.

Should I now try to apply offline and withdraw the online application?

    June 23, 2016
    • Pawan Bahuguna

There are only few days left and I am sure offline process will also take more time. When you applied TRV online?

    June 20, 2016

      Hi Carla,

It is up to you to book ticket in advance or not. Though it strengthen your application and assure Visa officer that you are going to return back. It’s not mandatory.

    Hi Pawan,

Your tips are very useful. Thank you so much for that. I hope you can help me out with my queries. I need to know how much is the Medical Insurance and how & where i can get that here in Philippines.

Also, I am confuse in getting a round trip tickets. Do i really need to get that & attached with my application? Coz what if i am denied with my application. How will the refund work? I hope you can enlighten me on this one. Thank you so much in advance!

    June 20, 2016
    • Pawan Bahuguna

      Hi Rhina,

Medical insurance cost depends upon the period of stay. The longer you stay, costly will be your medical insurance. Usually Banks and private firms provide this facility, you can Google it for your area.

It’s not mandatory to book ticket in advance, but it backs your application. You can search for refundable ticket but they are hard to find.

      Hope that helps.
